YOGI OF THE MONTH

August 2014 - Hatley Bright

What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?

I was at a dinner party and started talking to Susan about some balance problems I was having.  I decided to try a Basics class to see if I could even do any of the poses.  That was about two years ago.  I can see doing this for the rest of my life.

What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?

In the beginning,  it was mostly “don’t fall down!”  More often now, I strive for balance in both mind and body.

What is your favorite pose and why?

I like most of the hip openers, thread the needle and pigeon especially.  I really notice the difference in my work day when I have done those poses.  I also really appreciate plank.  It gives me a serious feeling of accomplishment.

What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?

I would have to say Breathe and Stretch.  It makes me slow down and center myself.  Also, it improves my flexibility.

How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?

Yoga has CHANGED my life!  I was unable to get off the floor by myself.  You know, a real “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” situation.  I am stronger and much more comfortable with myself now.

What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?

It is not a competition.  You don’t have to be the best in the room.  Do what you can and you will be surprised at what you can do the next time you practice.

What is your occupation?

I am the chef/instructor of Culinary Arts at Rappahannock Community College.

What activities do you enjoy?

I am a voracious reader.  I love most every genre.  I enjoy the water, both on and in.  And, of course, I love to cook.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck?

How much people care about others.  I know from personal experience how often Northern Neckers reach out to others, even if they barely know you.

Is there anything you want to add?

Susan has taught me that I don’t have to do every pose and still have a good practice.  I can modify any pose.  That is one of the reasons I keep coming back to try again.  She teaches to every individual's learning style and needs!  I hope she never stops teaching!
