YOGI OF THE MONTH

August 2022- Leigh Purcell

What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?

I had a friend who was super fit and always finding new ways to work out. She started it and recommended it to me. That was 15 years ago and I’ve been at it ever since. The first couple of years I used a tape at home.

What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?

Strength, flexibility, balance, and calm. I go to feel centered, energized, and relaxed. I always thought these were mutually exclusive states but have come to find out they aren’t.

What is your favorite pose and why?

Triangle pose because I could never do it properly and finally worked up to a point where I can execute it well. I always know I’m out of shape when I can’t do it.

What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?

Slow Flow

How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?

It has humbled me. I have limitations and have learned not to be impatient or feel like a failure if I can’t do a pose. It’s taught me how to relax when I feel uncomfortable…….my mantra is “you have your breath, breathe.” It’s also helped me to not overreact when I get out of breath or fatigued during my other athletic endeavors.

What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?

Don’t compare yourself to anyone. Don’t push yourself too hard……breathe. The rest will come.

What is your occupation?

I volunteer and help my parents and the community where I can.

What activities do you enjoy?

I love to swim and just be in the water in general whether on a boat, kayak or just myself. Cooking is my creative outlet and I love to learn by reading.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?

The people here have such a wonderful sense of community…..I have met so many supportive, loving and caring people here who really want a true friendship.

Is there anything you want to add?

I am so grateful for all I have learned from Susan. I love her newsletters and the caring way she runs her classes. I can’t imagine practicing anywhere else!
