YOGI OF THE MONTH
July 2017 - Gayle Chambers
What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?
I started practicing yoga in 2000. It seemed like a good idea at the time. I started with a very good friend when I lived in upstate NY. There were some times during the 17 years when I didn’t practice regularly but have always tried to.
What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?
My intention is to maintain flexibility as I get older, although it is getting harder instead of easier!!
What is your favorite pose and why?
My favorite pose is pigeon pose because it is just a wonderful stretch.
What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?
Breathe and Stretch is my favorite and I really try to attend regularly. It is a nice complement to a Hatha class I take in Urbanna. It is also very close to Yin Yoga, which I also love.
How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?
It has taught me how to relax, how to stand properly, how to understand my body and how to breathe in order to relax.
What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?
I would advise anyone to have patience at first. You have to learn how to clear your mind, focus on your yoga and allow yourself to enjoy it.
What is your occupation?
I'm retired from various part time jobs, mostly focused on computer work.
What activities do you enjoy?
I love to sew and do that even more regularly than yoga! I also enjoy walking and volunteering for a couple of organizations.
What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?
I love being around the water and also the small community feeling. It allows me to feel a part of my community and reminds me of the area where I grew up in New Jersey (yes, there are wonderful parts of Jersey, mostly the northwest!).
Is there anything you want to add?
Susan is just a fantastic instructor. I have had many instructors over the years and each one has their own special talents. I hear their voices in my head as I practice.
