YOGI OF THE MONTH
Steve Reiss - July 2022
What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?
As part of my passion for long distance cycling, I’m always looking for training and life-style techniques that will work in sync with my cycling. I’ve practiced yoga periodically for years especially when I started teaching spin classes at our YMCA ten years ago. A few too many trips around the sun however have reminded me I need to become more disciplined in attending classes and improving my poses.
What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?
I’m always looking for noticeable improvements in my flexibility and core strength. I also see a direct spiritual similarity between yoga and cycling. Even when being within a community of like mined yogis and cyclists, both activities are ultimately solitary. However, they do share a common meditative quality and on my good days (on the mat or in the saddle) it sometimes all comes together in a very special way and is quite magical.
What is your favorite pose and why?
Any pose or position that focuses on core strength quickly goes to the top of my list.
What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?
I have committed to doing at least one Slow Flow class a week in addition to the end of the week Breath & Stretch classes, which I find very beneficial after a typically hectic week.
How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?
It’s a good, constant reminder that life is always about the journey not the destination and that improvement comes in baby steps, not giant leaps.
What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?
Be humble, be consistent and wash your mat weekly.
What is your occupation?
I’m an architect, combined with a heavy dose of cycling, traveling, teaching and writing.
What activities do you enjoy?
Architecture, cycling and world traveling are my never-ending passions and I’ve be fortunate to be able to combine them into a lifestyle that works for me. Stir in some R & B music from my hometown, Chicago, and I’ll be smiling.
What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?
I’m not sure it’s always my favorite but I at least finally understand “Northern Neck Time,” that sort of local chill attitude about not getting too excited when you set specific meeting times, appointments, etc. My real favorite thing is experiencing and enjoying the unique cycle of seasons which living on the water brings.
Is there anything you want to add?
Susan’s gentle, extraordinarily calm method of teaching is a pleasure to be part of.
