YOGI OF THE MONTH

June 2024 - Kirsten Knull

What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?

I first came to yoga reluctantly. I was looking for a way to get a combined cardio and strength class all in one to save time, for example with a power flow class. It was completely about fitness in the beginning. And I wanted to have Susan’s yoga butt.

What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?

Unexpectedly, after I started to practice yoga regularly, I began to experience a sense of connectedness and spirituality I had not felt before. It was life- changing for me and I was insatiably curious to understand why. I wanted to learn more; to deepen my understanding of the principles and physical qualities that could create this new-found peace. So I went to a yearlong training program, not necessarily to become a teacher of others, but to be a student of yoga. Ultimately, I discovered I enjoyed both learning and sharing what I’ve learned, but most importantly, I learned skills that I can carry through all aspects of my life.

What is your favorite pose and why?

It depends on the day. I love the mental and physical challenge of Pigeon. I always learn about myself in that pose and feel so open after I hold it for longer periods. I also love Eagle. The juxtaposition of the lightness and focus required to balance, with the slight fire of the squatting standing leg and the wrapping of the rest of the body is a sweet combination.

What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?

I love any flow class Susan teaches. Moving with the breath is very powerful for me and quiets my mind like nothing else.

How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?

My yoga practice has made it possible for me to see and appreciate details in nature, people and circumstances that I previously would have missed. When I’m diligent in my practice and life brings chaos or challenges, I’m able to tap into a sense of peace that can allude me when I’m not.

What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?

  1. No one is watching you and no one is judging you. It’s a personal journey and every day your practice will look and feel different. Your body and breath will engage in new ways. Embrace that and know that, in actuality, no one is judging you but you.

  2. Use props! Blocks are your friends!

  3. Don’t give up on Savasana, even if you find it hard at first to lie there. Just do it. Use the tools Susan provides to let thoughts go or focus on your breath. It won’t be long before you cherish this pose.

What is your occupation?

Chief Revenue Offers, which basically means I help companies create new products, go to market, sell them and have good customer experiences along the way.

What activities do you enjoy?

Anything outdoors, reading, oil painting, and I’m a huge pranayama fan.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?

So many things! Aside from the obvious salt-life and beauty, it’s the people. It takes a certain kind of person to want to live an hour from the closest mall in a place that prioritizes community and family over other things. The shared values and commitment to this slower way of life is unique and should not be taken for granted.

Is there anything you want to add?

I can’t say enough about the IOY community and the trip to Spain. If you ever have an opportunity to take one of these trips, just do it! For me, it was the perfect blend of companionship, solitude, introspection, laughter, yoga, relaxation, old friends, new friends and of course, inspiring views. I’m so thankful to Susan and Alli for the amazing itinerary and a turnkey experience that felt like it was made just for me!
