YOGI OF THE MONTH

March 2017 - Andrea Latell

What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?

I have been practicing off and on for five years but for the last two years, I've been very consistent, practicing three to six times a week. I come from a background of numerous triathlons, including an Ironman, many marathons and long distance swimming. My joints started to hurt, I was tight everywhere and I needed yoga! Plus, it's a tremendous stress relief.

What intentions do you have for your yoga practice?

To get stronger, align my body, ease stress on my joints, improve posture, and relieve stress and anxiety.

What is your favorite pose and why?

I like Bird of Paradise. Sometimes I call it "Bird of Prey" because that’s what mine looks like. I also find Pigeon very relaxing.

What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?

Monday night Power Flow!

How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?

I am calmer, more at peace, and I feel stronger.

What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?

Just enjoy the gift and treat that yoga instructors offer. The time is so special. I feel like I’ve been in a spa or gotten a massage after yoga class. It’s just so wonderful. And it’s so nice to know it’s not a competition.

What is your occupation?

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I have a private mental health practice in Kilmarnock and also go into the local schools and work with kids. I’ve been counseling for 20 years!

What activities do you enjoy?

Triathlons, open water distance swimming, paddle boarding, hot yoga (really, any yoga), sailing, traveling, reading, shopping, spending time with my husband, Jerry, and our kids, Henry (5) and Skylar (10).

What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck?

The water! And my friends. What a wonderful place to raise a family.

Is there anything you want to add?

Susan's classes are really marvelous. It’s such a treat for me to go. I enjoy them so much.
