YOGI OF THE MONTH
March 2022 - Anita Riddle
What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?
I've been practicing yoga about a year altogether, taking into account the pandemic. It’s been a goal of mine for years. Once I retired and moved to White Stone, I followed up on that interest. I'd had a walking program for a while and took an exercise class here and there while working. Retiring gave me the time to include yoga classes!
What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?
To foster and maintain flexibility, strength, and balance.
What is your favorite pose and why?
Warrior poses are my favorite. They challenge my balance, strength, and attention to detail.
What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?
I take the Wednesday Slow Flow class and love it. It always challenges me and I feel so good afterwards.
How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?
I take a lot of what I've learned and apply it to different situations throughout the day. For example, I might focus on my breath to get through a stressful moment. I find I'm also more positive and calm.
What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?
LOL, I still think of myself as a beginner. My suggestions are not to be afraid, to keep coming back and to consider taking a private class and/or workshop to give you more confidence with the basics. Also, it's not a competition in the least... it's about your journey. Practice, practice, practice... and have fun!
What is your occupation?
I don't have an occupation anymore; I just do whatever I want. Seriously, I’ve been retired for two years and enjoy activities with my hubby!
What activities do you enjoy?
We love going for long walks and got into boating this past summer. I also tried flower gardening for the first time ever this past summer loved it! We also like to visit area breweries and listen to music. I paint furniture and things and just love being creative in that way. I also love to read and sing.
What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?
Waking up every morning to the mighty Rappahannock River flowing just outside our windows. We've been here for two years now and still feel like we're on vacation.
Is there anything you’d like to add?
Anyone I've spoken to in this community about yoga seems to have a connection with Susan and InsideOut Yoga and have wonderful things to say about their experiences. I, too, have had that very positive experience. There is a sense of home and warmth—even family—in the community she has built. She always takes the time to answer my many questions and to work with me that little extra when needed. She is a treasure here in this part of the state and we’re so lucky to have her.
