YOGI OF THE MONTH
May 2023 - Kelly Goodrich
What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?
I first started practicing yoga in college, where the University of Richmond offered free classes. I practiced off and on, but more consistently since having children, when the mental and physical release of yoga became helpful. I began enjoying online classes, especially Five Parks Yoga, at the start of Covid, though I have been so grateful to return to weekly in-person classes with Susan. The community experience and expert feedback enriches my practice in every way.
What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?
Yoga is one of the very few things I do just for myself, so my intention is usually to indulge in the experience. Instead of thinking five steps ahead, in constant anticipation of others’ needs, I try to be present and focus only on myself for that delicious hour.
What is your favorite pose and why?
I love so many poses, especially hip openers and balancing postures. I feel strong when I side blank, humble in pigeon pose, restful in child’s pose… I love to flow!
What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?
Vinyasa Flow, 100%, though I should probably try some of the other classes before I decide!
How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?
Functionally, yoga is what keeps my spine strong and in alignment after years of intermittent back pain. Yoga is also one of the ways that I demonstrate self-care and self-discipline to my children when they observe me - and occasionally join in my home practice. Yoga has also helped me to feel stronger and more flexible than I’ve ever felt. It is a perfect complement to the regular weight training and walking I do to stay physically healthy and mentally/emotionally grounded.
What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?
Even after nearly twenty years of practice, I love that I still feel like a beginner myself! It is a journey without a destination. Take it one moment, one practice at a time. Honor yourself for showing up to the mat and don’t be too serious! I’m surprised by how often I find myself laughing out loud - or even crying at the end of a practice. It can be powerful.
What is your occupation?
I am an RN and part-time Life Skills teacher at Christchurch School. I deliver health education and wellness lessons to high school students. But for the past 11 years, I have had the privilege and pleasure of mostly being a stay-at-home mom. Now that my youngest child is about to enter Kindergarten, I’ve been enjoying contemplating what my next professional chapter will hold.
What activities do you enjoy?
I love traveling with my family. We returned in July from a year of living abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico. I enjoy cooking for my three kids (Louisa 11, August 9, Ellis, 6) who are hearty, adventurous, and appreciative eaters. I love reading and being read to by my children. I love going for long walks with my husband and best companion, Pete.
What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?
We have lived here for twelve years and I am constantly discovering new corners of this beautiful place to explore. I love canoeing with my family on the Rappahannock River, in Dragon Run, Mobjack Bay and other waterways. The opportunities for water adventures are endless! I also love that my mom lives in the Northern Neck too! What a gift to be near family, especially in this phase of life.
Is there anything you want to add?
Thanks for this fun opportunity, Susan! And thanks for being the perfect teacher for me over the years. You have always met me where I am and welcomed me back into your classes no matter how much time has lapsed between visits, How lucky we all are to have you.
