YOGI OF THE MONTH

October 2024 - Catherine Baker

What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?

I started practicing yoga in my 20’s with a focus on just the physical aspects… then raising a family and pursuing a career took all my available time. When I retired early in 2018, I began practicing regularly again with instructors who focus on the physical, mental and spiritual components of yoga.

What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?

To build strength, flexibility, and balance and achieve a mindful, calm, present, and non-judgmental state. All this through persistence!

What is your favorite pose and why?

My favorite pose is bakasana/crow because I haven't quite mastered it. I suspect fear of face planting is a factor but I keep trying.  And when I master crow, it will be onward and upward to other arm balance poses!

What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?

Susan’s Vinyasa Flow class on Tuesday and Thursdays, because it is very athletic and challenges me to grow in my practice.

How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?

Yoga has given me so many good things. I love that there is no age limit to practicing yoga, and I can take it with me into the next decades. I’ve seen the physical benefits from practicing regularly in increased strength, flexibility and improved balance. The mental health aspect of yoga helps me on and off the mat as well. I’ve experienced a season of profound loss with the deaths of 3 family members and 3 close friends in the last 2 years. Yoga is one of the tools I’ve used to help me with grief. An hour of yoga spent focused on the present moment gives me a sense of peace and calm that I take with me when class ends.

What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?

DO NOT compare yourself to anyone in class and DO NOT judge yourself! Give yourself grace, be patient with your progress, be persistent, and most of all, enjoy the journey.

What is your occupation?

I retired early from a decades-long career in television and digital advertising sales. The industry was, and still is, very competitive and I enjoyed working with business owners, but ultimately I experienced burnout. My current occupation is ‘Being Retired’ and I’m living my best life here in the Northern Neck!

What activities do you enjoy?

Yoga, of course!  My husband Tom and I are gym rats and enjoy spin classes, cycling outdoors, time spent in nature and on the water, cooking, baking, good wine and traveling. I have a certified therapy dog, Daisy, and we do ‘Read 2 Rover’ visits at Chesapeake Academy with the pre-K through 2nd grade classes. I’m also active at Grace Episcopal Church and am fulfilled by serving others.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?

The beauty of nature and the water is spectacular, and small town living has its own charm. I also enjoy the wonderful community of friends I’ve been blessed with in the Northern Neck.

Is there anything you want to add?

Thank you, Susan, for being an exceptional instructor who challenges and encourages her yogis!
