LaSource Spa

I met Glynda Antonio at a book group when I first moved to Irvington in 1997. It was formed by a group of young mothers and held at Grace Church. Glynda and I crossed paths now and again over the years and then I ran into her a few years later at a Lancaster High football game. Ironically, each of us was starting our own business and she impressed me with her passion for the career she was about to embrace. I've had massages from her many times since and it's become a tradition for Burke and me to give each other LaSource massages for Valentine's Day. With each massage, I have no doubt that she has found her passion, inside and out.

Tell me about LaSource Spa.

We offer quality spa services that benefit our local community at reasonable prices. Many of our newer services were added to our menu through client demand, such as Non-Surgical Face Lift, Non-Surgical Liposuction, Dermaplaning and Guinot Hydradermie Lift Treatment; which has 8 variations depending on client’s needs and is performed by our Master Esthetician. In addition, we offer and excel at premier massage services; Bio-Elements and Derma-e Facials; Chemical Peels; Lash and Brow Tinting; Body Treatments and expert waxing services.

How long has the business been there and when did you first become a part of it?

I started LaSource in 2009 at my home. In 2011 I moved LaSource to its present location in Kilmarnock.

What ignited your passion for this particular line of work?

Seeing myself as a Professional Grocery Shopper/Amateur Tennis Player, I began using prayer/meditation for a number of years to search for a more fulfilling path. One Friday spring morning in 2007 while looking out our breakfast room window; I thought, “I think I’ll be a Massage Therapist.” The following Monday, I was enrolled at The International Spa Institute in Newport News and began an education that continues to this day. I had never had a massage nor any spa service in my life. I don’t know where the desire to massage came from; I knew nothing about massage. I do know it has led me to a path of fulfillment.

How many employees do you have?

Our main core consists of an Office Manager, three Massage Therapists, an Esthetician, a Master Esthetician and a Waxing Tech. We contract with many more therapists as needed.

What do you like most about your work?

What I like most is being of service, producing results and sharing the experience with others. It's very rewarding.

Excluding yours, what local business/organization do you admire most and why?

When LaSource Spa opened on Main Street, I chose Chesapeake Bank as a successful business to model. The bank was successful, and I began to look for what made it successful. I saw professionalism, competency, transparency and honesty as good traits to build a business.

What advice would you give to someone who would like to start a business?

You’ll want passion, education and experience. Start small, invest back into your business wisely, looking for high returns. Listen to your clients both verbally and non-verbally. Know your competition. Keep it fresh and exciting by changing it up to avoid stagnancy. Give back to the community. Be responsible; employees, clients and community depend on you. Be accountable and forgiving of self and others. Don’t sweat the small stuff, realize it's all small stuff and have fun!

What do you do in your non-work time?

I enjoy being at home with my family and pets, trying out new menu ideas for dinner as suggested by clients. They really have taught me how to eat well and healthy.

How do you manage stress?

I take however many moments it takes to tune in with my spiritual foundation, reminding myself life does not have to be experienced through stress or fear. It's a choice. Let go, trust the process, there is something much bigger at hand.
