One Day or Day One
“I'm going to be great one day.” ~ Godfrey Orateng
With the Kekoka Yoga Retreat (KYR), my group & private class schedule, IOY/OBX² registration, and all the other things going on last month, I’ve been putting off writing my June newsletter―until now, the last minute. I’m not a serial procrastinator, but when I’m not in the mood to do something, I fill time with “avoidance hobbies:” things I’d rather be doing that still make me feel productive. (“Look at that cluttered bookshelf, I’d better rearrange it…”)
There are lots of reasons we put off stuff: laziness, boredom, just don’t feel like it… but I think there’s often a deeper reason: fear. We’re afraid of rejection, of not being good enough. But are we also afraid of potential?
Marianne Williamson wrote, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?”
There was once a rabbi who had come across hard times, so he prayed to God for help. “My wife is ill and I need money for medicine, please let me win the lottery this week.” The following week he prayed again. “My son’s tuition fees are due and I’ve no money to pay them, please, please let me win the lottery this week.” The next week he was at it yet again. “I’ve lost my job and now I’m going to lose my home. I’ve been praying so hard. How come I haven’t won?” A booming voice came to him in his prayers, “If you want to win the lottery, you’ve got to buy a ticket!”
KYR keynote speaker, Bradley Grinnen, has a quote on his homepage: “You could spend another week, frustrated by what's holding you back, or you can start your change today. You always have a choice.”
What have you been putting off? How great can you be today?
